“Welcome to the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas where the shelves brim with thousands of mismatched goods: VCRs, vacuum cleaners, guitars, and tool belts. It’s a thriving 24-hour business that hands out quick cash for people with nothing in the bank. Many Americans live close to the financial edge, with about a quarter of households thought to be one lay-off or one emergency-expenditure away from financial disaster.
By night, customers line up five deep to exchange their possessions for cash. Many are desperate, even pawning the gold fillings from their teeth for as little as twelve dollars. Gamblers pawn jewellery on their way to the casino and people shop for wedding bands at 2 am. There’s no telling who’ll walk up, and what their story will be.”
