This fascinating short clip shows the skill and work that go into making a gamelan, a kind of orchestra built around tuned percussion instruments. For hundreds of years, the meditative sound of the gamelan has filled the Islamic courts of Java.
Rob Kapilow and New York’s own Gamelan Kusuma Laras interpret these sounds in What Makes It Great? at 7.30pm on November 14, as part of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival.
WHAT. This is incredible. I have to say, looks slightly sped up.. She can’t be THAT fast…!!!!

This is pretty awesome. If a little confused. Are those Balinese hats? With a Javanese bonang? And what’s the guy on the right doing with two panggul? Maybe he should’ve been given gender mallets. If we’re sticking with the Balinese theme, those gongs should be facing each other. But no wait, now we have two very different sized drums. OK maybe we’re not in Bali. And those serpents are AWFULLY Javanese. But those HATS!!! WHAT IS THIS??? AHHH I’M SO CONFUSED!
